Tallest Rubbish Mountain in Delhi to surpass the height of the Taj Mahal

New Delhi: This might sound weird to one but this is the fact right now that a rubbish mountain in Delhi is going to rise higher than the Taj Mahal in the coming year. Such a case of a rubbish mountain rising so high every year is something to be highly worried about because this denotes the excessive level of wastes being emitted every year and in fact, every day. At a time, when the capital city has become one of the most populated places in the world, the garbage and waste management issue needs to be taken up with extra concern.

With the garbage mountain based in the Ghazipur landfill, this is a common sight for the hawks and other birds hovering around the area along with the stray cows, dogs and rats wandering around as well. Not to forget the foul-smell it is spreading! The rubbish mountain covers an area of more than 40 football pitches in Ghazipur and rises by nearly 10 metres a year. The mountain right now is more than 65 metres (213 feet) high.

If the current rate of its growth continues like this, there is no doubt that it will go taller than the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra in 2020. Not only this, in fact the Supreme Court had warned it last year that in keeping with its height, red warning lights will soon have to be put on the dump so that the passing jets could be alerted of its existence.

A Delhi municipal official said, "About 2,000 tonnes of garbage is dumped at Ghazipur each day."

Other than the pollution and foul smell it is spreading, the rubbish mountain led to the death of two people in 2018 when a section of the hill collapsed in heavy rains. The death of the people, although stopped the dumping for a few days, but it had to be continued once again as there was no alternative in the hands of the authority other than dumping the rubbish in here.
