Penalty to be imposed for throwing garbage's on streets or littering any place in Guwahati

Guwahati: Guwahati Municipal Corporation on Wednesday issued a circular stating that no person shall throw or place any rubbish, offensive matter or sewage on any street or in any place Under Section 272 of GMC Act, 1971.

Although, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) had engaged many non-government organizations (NGOs) to collect garbage from the 30 city wards but the complaints still continue to pour in.

As per media reports, there have been several complaints from citizens of Guwahati that garbage collection is not regular and in some places, the collectors have been charging money on a monthly basis.

The Government circular further stated that Under Section 299 of Guwahati Municipal Corporation Act 1971, no person shall willfully or negligently spill and litter in streets or any place within the jurisdiction of Guwahati Municipal Corporation.

Therefore, the GMC authority hereby notified that a person throwing garbage's on streets or littering any place shall be penalized as per Guwahati Municipal Corporation Act 1971 and as amended.

A local media in a report claimed that only 31% of the 600 respondents had garbage collected daily from their homes. Also, rest 69% of the people stated that it was once in two days and this 69% also has a mix of respondents whose garbage collection was on the whims and fancies of the collecting agent.

From the ground report, it has also come to light that the majority of the respondents staying in the Guwahati city were unhappy with the GMC’s garbage collection agents. The main problem cited by them was the irregularity of the service.

Earlier, The Sentinel Digital was also informed by the residents of ward no 25, that there are many areas in the area where the collectors never visit and they have to carry their garbage to the nearest disposal site.

Here, one can also figure out that at least 31% of people in the city have claimed that their garbages are being collected regularly and they are happy with the service provided by GMC.

They also said that the garbage collection can be made better with proper segregation of the wastes.

Few of them also suggested that an awareness building exercise by the GMC has to be done on a regular basis and the awareness campaign has to be launched across the city.
