NILGIRIS: People in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district will have to show their vaccine certificate at liquor shops in order to purchase alcohol. In an order, the Nilgiris district collector has said people who want to buy liquor must be vaccinated and they would have to show their vaccination certificate at liquor counters before purchasing alcohol.

Nilgiris, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful places in the country, has witnessed hordes of tourists in the past couple of days. As per media reports, authorities have come across a fact that a large number of people in the district are hesitant about getting vaccinated because of rumours of having adverse effects on their health as because they consume liquor. Several attempts have been made by the administration to make people understand that these are rumours, the endeavours failed to produce the desired results following which the district collected decided to issue an order.

The collector announced that those people, who are vaccinated, are eligible to purchase alcohol and they would have to take their vaccine certificate to the liquor shops where the certificate will be checked before providing alcohol. As per the authorities, around 97 per cent people in the district have been vaccinated. It was found that a section of people is of the opinion that they would not get inoculated with the Covid jab as they consume alcohol. The decision of allowing only vaccinated people for purchase of liquor has been for the safety of everyone, authorities said.

Tamil Nadu registered 1562 new Covid-19 positive cases on Thursday. Altogether, 26, 17,943 people in the state have contracted the virus so far and the number of active cases at present is 16,478. The total number of deaths is 34,961.
