DARJEELING: A horrific case of filicide has sent shockwaves in the region of Lower Dudhey under the Kurseong block of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). Gopal Rai allegedly murdered his 24-year-old son, Rohan Rai, due to frustration over his son's addiction to mobile gaming.

This horrifying incident occurred on an early morning of December 11 when Gopal, having lost his temper, took Rohan out from his house and started assaulting him with an axe. Having smashed Rohan in the right eye, shoulder, and head, Gopal buried his dead son in a shallow hole on the backside of his house, covering him up with rocks, mud, and grass.

The truth finally came out when Gopal confessed to his wife revealing the details of the crime. A police team from Garidhura along with local civic authorities dug up the body in the presence of a magistrate. The remains were sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.

Gopal has been arrested and is currently in police custody. According to Gopal’s brother, Tej Bahadur Rai, Rohan had been mentally unstable and addicted to mobile gaming. The family often had disputes over the monthly phone recharge, and the situation had been worsening.

The local leaders, including Gram Panchayat Pradhan Maniraj Dumjan, expressed their regret saying that Gopal should have sought help instead of resorting to violence. The community is left in shock and sorrow.
