Aadhaar is Not a Proof of Citizenship, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju Informs Lok Sabha

New Delhi: Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of Law and Justice, notified Lok Sabha that Aadhar Card is not proof of citizenship in India.

The Lok Sabha has been informed that the government entities and the third parties will not link between voter identity cards and the Aadhaar cards anymore. Aadhaar Card is only meant to be proof of residence, it's not proof of citizenship.

According to reports, there was a written question if the Aadhaar card is mandatory for something to reject or approve any official work. For this question Union Minister of Law and Justice, Kiren Rijiju replied that "No such link will be created".

Similarly, answering a question on the logic that the government gave that Aadhaar card is a proof or certificate of citizenship of India and whether the government has made a rule to verify citizenship using Aadhaar card, he said that Aadhaar card is only meant to be proof of residence, it's not proof of citizenship.

Recently in 2021, a bill was passed where it enables the linking of electoral data with the Aadhar card to curb the menace of multiple enrolments of the same person in different places.

The bill was strongly opposed by the Congress Party saying that "Aadhar only meant to be proof of residence, it's not proof of citizenship"

The Income Tax Department set a deadline to link Aadhaar with PAN. If not done within a time limit it will be declared as inoperative. Also, a fine of around 10,000 will be charged to an individual if they fail to link Aadhaar and PAN. It was proposed by the central government to link Aadhaar and PAN, especially in the case of financial transactions.
