NEW DELHI : An initiative has been undertaken by the government of India and Asian Development Bank (ADB) who has agreed on a USD 300 million loan to transform more than 300 kilometres of highways and district roads in Assam.

The Additional Secretary, Department of Economics Affairs, Rajat Kumar Mishra along with Nilaya Mitash, the OC of India Resident Mission, ADB , have signed the accord of the Assam South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation Corridor Connectivity Improvement project.

Rajat Mishra stated that, the project will enhance and assist the Assam government's project , Asom Mala. Asom Mala is a programme initiated to upgrade the quality of roads and state highways and also help in filling the infrastructural gap.

Furthermore Mitash emphasised on the fact that, this particular step of improving the infrastructure and road connectivity will provide better accessibility to the general public and increase mobility in the under developed areas of Assam.

The selected roads for the development programme are connected with the SASEC corridors which links India with Bhutan and Bangladesh, as per the ministry of finance. Moreover, these roads will enhance the cross border transport, import and export.

The finance ministry is of the view that, this particular project will assist the multimodal logistics park that is under construction in Jogighopa to serve road, rail and air transport system.

The ministry also claims that the project will transform the one lane highways into two lane highways and also construct disaster as well as climate resilient establishments. It will also facilitate in public transport and pedestrian facilities.

The project will also construct highways in such a way that it can prevent landslides and flood in mountainous areas. The department has also stated that, it will provide protection to the wildlife and create structures to eradicate the ongoing human elephant conflict.
