At least 31 people died in thunderstorm in three states in India

Guwahati: At least 31 people were killed in three states as thunderstorm and rain hit several parts of North India on Tuesday which also caused damaged to property and crops.

31 people from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat have lost their lives in thunderstorm and rain. 16 people died in Madhya Pradesh while six in Rajasthan and nine in Gujarat.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief on the death of the people and also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the next of the kin of those who lost their lives.

The PMO in a tweet said, "PM @narendramodi has expressed grief at the loss of lives due to unseasonal rains and storms in MP, Rajasthan, Manipur and various parts of the country. The government is doing its best to provide all possible assistance to those affected. The situation is being monitored clearly."

Gusty winds triggered by western disturbance in Rajasthan which affected normal life in several areas. Heavy rainfall triggered in Chittorgarh, Sri Ganganagar, Ajmer, Kota and Pilani. According to a meteorological official, Western Disturbance and winds with moisture from Arabian sea and Bay of Bengal are developing this kind of weather conditions. Gusty winds are causing dust storm mainly in western parts of the state because the soil is loose and there is a lack of moisture.

On the other hand, thunderstorm also hit many areas in Assam on the midnight of Tuesday which caused several damage. In Nagaon district, three persons injured including women after a thunderstorm hit the area. The injured persons are Muslim Ali, Muzamul Ali and Mumina Khatun. The thunderstorm and rain on Tuesday night caused damaged in Kampur, Kasua and Kathiatoli in Nagaon district. Electricity in many parts of the state along with the city has been disconnected. Massive damage has also been caused in Dudhnoi, Rangjuli in Goalpara district.

Meanwhile, a person lost his life in lightning at Kokrajhar. The deceased has been identified as Kaliput Basumatary.

The thunderstorm also destroyed the Bihu Pandals in Guwahati for which the bihu functions have to be stopped in the middle of the programme.
