Authorities impose 70% 'corona-fee' on MRP of alcohol in Delhi

Delhi: Authorities have decided to impose 70% 'corona-fee' on MRP of alcohol in Delhi. This happened as shops in Delhi shut after opening in large numbers as people gathered outside shops which violated social distancing rules amid lockdown. Following this, the Delhi Excise Commissioner wrote to Delhi Police Commissioner stating, "Directions may be conveyed to field functionaries that liquor vends of 4 government corporations as per list finalised by them in pursuance to order of this department should be allowed to function from 9 am to 6:30 pm." Earlier, the timings were 10 am to 7 pm. Delhi is seeing rising number of infections of coronavirus. 

Meanwhile, State government has allowed liquor shops to open in Assam. The decision taken on May 2 allow sale of wholesale vends of foreign liquor and country spirit in the state. Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) "Off" and country spirit "off" shops located in districts, which has come under the Green Zone, will be allowed to operate. "Off" are wine shops that sell only liquor, "on" shops that sell liquor and the consumption is allowed on the premises. This includes bars and restaurants. Shops will be open from 11 AM to 5 PM on permitted days. Old rates will apply for now.

Contrary to the Centre's announcement, the Kerala government, has decided to keep the liquor shops shut for now.

"None need to worry. It's only temporary measure," said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan after chairing the daily Covid-19 review meeting.
