COVID-19: Several States go for lockdown till March 31

NEW DELHI: Several States have announced lockdown till March 31 as a preventive measure against COVID-19. Among the States are Delhi, Telangana, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and seven districts of Haryana.

Telangana would be under lockdown till March 31 in a bid to contain coronavirus spread, Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao said here on Sunday.

Addressing the media, he urged people to stay indoors for another week to save themselves, the state and the country. There would be no curfew-like situation during the lockdown but more than five persons would not be allowed to assemble, he said. Some essential services would be exempted from lockdown and a member from each family would be allowed to venture out to buy milk, vegetables, and other essential items, he added.

Andhra Pradesh will be under lockdown till March 31 to contain the spread of coronavirus, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy announced on Sunday.

He appealed to people to remain indoors till the month end to save themselves and society from the virus. To prevent the spread of the virus, the Haryana government too decided a lockdown in Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, Panipat, Jhajjar, Rohtak, and Panchkula districts till March 31.

A spokesperson for the Health and Family Welfare Department said that orders have been issued regarding the lockdown.

He said that COVID-19 has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Haryana has two international airports in the vicinity in New Delhi and Chandigarh and there are more than 6,600 people under surveillance in the state.

Mumbai and rest of Maharashtra wore a deserted look as people remained indoors for the voluntary ‘Janata curfew’ to arrest the spread of coronavirus, here on Sunday.

With two deaths in four days and 74 positive cases, Maharashtra has the highest number of Covid-19 patients in the country, with test results of many suspected people awaited. As panic bells started ringing, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday clamped a near-total lockdown in the state — from midnight till March 31 — with strict prohibitory orders right up to panchayats.
