Cyclone Mandous Makes Landfall in Coastal Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: Cyclone Mandous made landfall on the Indian coast in the Northern part of Tamil Nadu late at night on Friday causing heavy to very heavy rains in several parts of the state.

According to reports, the cyclonic disturbance crossed into the land near the Mamallapuram district of the state causing rains in the capital city of Chennai as well as the neighbouring region. Gusts of surface winds caused by the weather disturbance also uprooted trees in several parts of the state.

According to the reports published by the Indian Meteorological Department, the Kattupakkam region in the Kancheepuram district received heavy precipitation measuring 16 cm till 5:30 AM on Saturday. Nungambakkam recorded 11.1 cm of precipitation in the same time frame. While Hindustan University measured 11 cm, Meenambakkam recorded 11.5 cm of rain.

Several other automated weather stations recorded heavy to very heavy rains during the same time frame. Some of them are 8.7 cm in Madhavaram, 10 cm in Poonamallee, Puzhal and Tiruttani, 7.2 cm in Sathyabhama University Kancheepuram, 9.7 cm in ACS College, 6.2 in Villivakkam, 8.3 cm in YMCA Nandanam, 7.2 cm in NIOT Pallikaranai and 6.2 cm in MRC Nagar.

Winds uprooted trees in several parts of the state and caused power disruptions in multiple localities. Wind speeds of 65-75 kmph with sudden gusts of upto 85 kmph were observed as the cyclone made landfall between 11.30 PM on Friday and 1.30 AM on Saturday.

As the disturbance moves further into the land, wind speeds as well as rains are expected to decrease by the end of Saturday. Warnings of light to moderate rainfall is still active in several parts of the state. Fishermen of the state have been told not to venture out on the open seas on Saturday as well.
