LAKHIMPUR KHERI: The bodies of two minor sisters belonging to the Dalit Community, aged 14 and 17, were found hanging from a tree outside a village in the Nighasan area of Lakhimpur Kheri district in Uttar Pradesh, the UP Police said in a statement.
Both the girls were found in the sunset hours of Wednesday.
In a statement, the mother of the two girls said that three bike-borne men had picked up both girls at around 3 in the afternoon on Wednesday and they were found hanging from a tree after several hours.
The police said that they did not receive any kidnapping complaint from the family and were only informed when the bodies of both girls were found.
The girls' family has alleged that both the girls were raped and then murdered.
After learning about the death of the girls, the locals started an uproar protesting against the district administration for their hollow security system for girls in the state. Later police personnel were deployed to control the situation.
The bodies of both the girls have been sent for post-mortem and other post-death formalities.
Superintendent of Police in Kheri district, Sanjiv Suman, IPS reached the crime spot and ordered an investigation into the case immediately.
Suman while talking to the media said, "We have sent the bodies for an autopsy to ascertain the reason for death. However, as of now, we cannot rule out the possibility of suicide as there were no physical injuries on their bodies".
IGP Lucknow Range, Laxmi Singh, IPS also inquired about the case and later said, "The girls were found hanging from their own dupattas. There were no visible signs of injury on their bodies. If it would have been a case of rape, there would have been some form of resistance which would have left some marks on their bodies but there were no such injuries on their bodies. However we await the autopsy results and after that, we will decide where this case should progress"
