Delhi: Relatives Of Toddler Accidentally Shoots Him While Trying Out New Pistol, Arrested

New Delhi: A three-year-old boy was allegedly shot at while his aunt and grandaunt were trying to fire a bullet from a newly purchased pistol at their home in Anand Parbat area in North Delhi.

The police later arrested the two women and informed that the condition of the child is stable.

As per the police, the grandaunt initially lied to them in order to save her daughter-in-law. Two other members of the family are absconding. It is believed that they are also involved in this incident and they allegedly bought this pistol.

The incident occurred around 1 AM on 29 January. The 47-year-old grandaunt initially said that she was walking home with her sister's grandson from Shastri Nagar to Than Singh Nagar when two unknown bike riders shot at her near the Sarai Rohilla flyover. She added that the bullet missed her completely but ended up hitting the boy in his shoulder.

The toddler was then immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and subsequently went through a surgery after he lost plenty of blood. A case of attempted murder was registered.

However, there seemed to be some contradictions according to a senior police officer investigating the case. The officer said that the police took the grandaunt's statement and tried to verify the allegations, only to find discrepancies.

The team suspected the activities of the women and hence, more than two dozen CCTV's in the area were thoroughly checked.

Neither did the police spot anyone firing at the baby nor did they spot the woman in the footage.

Thereafter, the investigating team visited the parents and grandmother of the child and made enquiries. After the enquiries were made, the police came to a conclusion that their statements did not align with that of the complainant.

Sagar Singh Kalsi, DCP(North) said that the woman was again questioned and this time she blamed a local behind this incident. The police found that she was constantly lying and later, she confessed about it too.

The women finally admitted that her 20 year old daughter-in- law accidentally fired at the toddler while they were trying a new weapon at their home.

The police have recovered a blood stained bedsheet from their house and the weapon used during the offence was also recovered.

The aunt and grandaunt have been arrested and booked under sections pertaining to criminal conspiracy and giving false information to a public servant. Also, the hunt to nab the woman's absconding sons is on.
