Freedom Fighter And Social Worker Shakuntala Choudhary Passes Away At 102

GUWAHATI: Gandhian social worker and freedom fighter Shakuntala Choudhary took her last breath on Sunday 20 February in Sarania Ashram of Guwahati, Assam.

Shakuntala Choudhary from Kamrup district of Assam died at the age of 102 had served for the well-being of the villagers. She was residing in the Sarania Ashram of Guwahati for decades.

The renowned social worker was suffering from old age-related diseases for the last ten years and was receiving treatment as informed by the caretakers at Sarania Ashram.

The caretakers further informed that the veteran Gandhian's body has been laid in the ashram premises for her admirers to pay tribute.

According to reports the last rites will be performed at Nabagraha crematorium Monday 21 February 2022. The funeral ceremony will be observed with full state honours.

Throughout her life, Choudhary had made efforts to bring happiness to the lives of many by working for a better society. She worked selflessly mainly for women and children.

For her support and immense love towards the villagers, Shakuntala Choudhary was fondly called 'Shakuntala Baideo.'

Earlier in 2021, she was honoured by the Government of India with the fourth highest civilian award Padma Shree.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi took to Twitter to express his sadness over the demise of the great freedom fighter and also paid condolences to families and countless admirers.

In his tweet, the PM wrote that Shakuntala Choudhary will be remembered for her activities and lifelong struggle in promoting Gandhian values.

He further added that the noble work by Shakuntala Choudhary at the Sarania Ashram had positively impacted many individuals.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also offered condolences writing on Twitter where he mentioned the lifelong service by Shakuntala Devi.

He added the life was Shakuntala Choudhary was devoted to truth, simplicity, selfless service and non-violence at Sarania Ashram in Guwahati, the place where Mahatma Gandhi had stayed in 1946.

Assam Minister of Health & Family Welfare Keshab Mahanta and State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains of Chowdhary at the Sarania Ashram.
