Guwahati: Amid the rampant spread of the coronavirus, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Making the announcement via the micro-blogging site Twitter, Sawant said that he is 'asymptomatic' and has opted for home isolation.

"I wish to inform all that I have been detected COVID19 positive. I am asymptomatic and hence have opted for home isolation. I shall continue to discharge my duties working from home," the 47-year-old wrote in a tweet.

Sawant further urged the people who recently came in contact with him to get themselves tested for the Covid-19 virus. "Those who have come in my close contact are advised to take the necessary precautions," he further added.

This development has come amid a massive spike in the number of coronavirus cases in the state, coinciding with the country's zooming numbers. Meanwhile, Goa on Tuesday recorded its highest single-day spike with 588 people testing positive for coronavirus, taking the state's COVID-19 count to 18,006, while two deaths took the toll to 194.

Goa has so far registered 18,006 cases, and 194 deaths. While 13,850 patients have been discharged, active cases in the state number 3,962. So far, a total of 2,02,730 samples have been tested for the virus.

Meanwhile, a single-day spike of 78,357 cases has pushed India's coronavirus tally to 37,69,523, the Union Health Ministry data this morning showed. While death count has risen to 66,333 with 1,045 more fatalities. 29,01,908 patients have recovered from the infection in the country, pushing the recovery rate to 76.98 percent.
