Jamsetji Tata Named World's Top Philanthropist In Last 100 Years

New Delhi: The late Jamsetji Tata has been named as the world's top Philanthropist of the last 100 Years as per a report prepared by Hurun Research and EdelGive Foundation.

The Indian Pioneer industrialist is regarded as the "Father of Indian Industry" and has donated a whopping $102.4 billion. He was followed by Microsoft Founder Bill Gates and his ex-wife Melinda Gates.

Rupert Hoogewerf, chairman and chief researcher of Hurun Report, said in a statement that whilst American and European philanthropists may have dominated the thinking of philanthropy over the last century, Jamsetji Tata, founder of India's Tata Group, is the world's biggest philanthropist.

The overall philanthropic value of Jamsetji Tata comprises of 66 percent of Tata Sons, solely based on the value of listed entities, as per the report.

Jamsetji Tata was born in 1839 in Navsari, a city in south Gujarat. Tata made most of his fortune through the Central India Spinning Weaving and Manufacturing company.

Tata Trusts took off with the setting up of JN Tata Endowment in 1892 for higher education.

The Tata's have a reputation for doing charity work with the Conglomerate donating at least half of their profits to charitable organizations.

It is to be noted that he is the only Indian to have featured in the top 10 list of 2021 EdelGive Hurun Philanthropists of the Century. Apart from Tata, Azim Premji, the former chairman of Wipro is the only Indian to have made the Top 50 list, ranking at 12th.

Azim Premji is often referred to as the 'Czar of the Indian IT Industry.' Premji has transferred 67 per cent of Wipro to the Azim Premji Endowment fund since 2010.

The Azim Premji Foundation together with Wipro has donated $150 million for tackling coronavirus disease.
