J&K: CRPF Allows Deployment Of Women During Anti-Insurgency Operation

NEW DELHI: A senior commander of the paramilitary force stated on Friday that the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is thinking about training female personnel for their deployment during counter-insurgency operations for searches near gunfight scenes, etc. in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). This will be a first in J&K's history of insurgency if it is put into practice.

According to Charu Sinha, inspector general of the CRPF (Srinagar sector), women frequently experience discomfort during cordon and search operations by male-dominated security forces.

"Earlier, someone may not have given this much attention, but every day when we are engaged in [counter-insurgency] operations, we enter residences and there are Kashmiri women inside... I am aware that we are unable to send [male troops]. We don't want to insult their sensibilities. We, therefore, reasoned that including the female component would be the best course of action, " said Sinha.

In Kashmir, the CRPF frequently participates in the cordon and search operations alongside the police and the Army, which frequently result in gunfights.

Sinha claimed that the CRPF's operations had improved and become more technically sound. We have put a lot of emphasis on training, and now we are emphasising the women's component.

When conducting counter-insurgency operations, they seek to ensure that women are at ease during searches notwithstanding claims of harassment. When working with the female population, we want them to feel at ease because "we respect the sentiments of the people," according to Sinha.

Sinha said, on the basis of experimentation, it was being done. "...we must observe their training." She claimed that the women that work there are excellent, younger in age, and full of energy and enthusiasm.

They hired a team and had their work there for around six months as part of an experiment. "We trained them, deployed them, and evaluated their aptitude and degree of interest. They were quite competent, sincere, and diligent, in our opinion. Now, based on that, we have chosen to move forward with this, " added Sinha.
