Mamata Banerjee leads protest march against Hathras incident, slams BJP govt

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led a protest march in Kolkata against the Hathras incident and slammed BJP government in Uttar Pradesh and the Centre for torturing Dalits, minority communities and farmers.

''Today I am not a Hindu, I am a Dalit'' said Banerjee while addressing a rally. The protest rally was her first since the coronavirus pandemic broke out in March and after a team of Trinamool Congress leaders were restricted from entering Hathras to meet the victim's family on Friday.

''The daughter of Hathras is our daughter. If we are to brighten the country's future, we have to stand beside Dalits and minority communities'' added Banerjee who is set to fight the upcoming Assembly elections in 2021.

Banerjee targeted BJP for making fake promises every time before elections.

''Before elections, the BJP leaders go to a Dalit house and get food from outside and claim they have eaten at a Dalit home but afterwards they torture and trash them''

She further said that she wanted to speak to the kin of the deceased on the phone but their phone was snatched.
