New Delhi: Delhi Police Unveils All-Female Contingent at Republic Day Parade

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police is introducing an all-female contingent during the 75th Republic Day parade. As they march down Kartavya Path, this unprecedented move aims to promote gender equality and women's empowerment. Led by Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Shweta K Sugathan, the group consists of 194 head constables and constables who will showcase their abilities with pride.

To emphasize the value of diversity, it has been disclosed that 80% of those taking part in this year's Republic Day parade originate from the northeastern states. This tactic is consistent with the city police force's hiring strategy, which seeks to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and communities located in Northeast India.

Robin Hibu, the Special Commissioner of Police for the Armed Unit, expressed great enthusiasm regarding this historic moment. According to him, selecting women from the armed forces unit as part of their contingent is a major step towards inclusivity. These dedicated women have been practicing daily at Kartyava Path and are all set to make their first appearance in parade while showcasing passion and commitment.

It is worth mentioning that the Delhi Police has accomplished a remarkable feat by showcasing a pipe band of women, under the leadership of Constable Ruyangunuo Kense. Consisting of 135 head constables and constables, this ensemble will perform the "Delhi Police Song" during their parade as an exceptional recognition and celebratory moment.

Despite the introduction of a pipe band exclusively for female members last year, it was overseen by Rajender Singh, who is male. This year's appointment of Constable Ruyangunuo Kense as leader demonstrates an even stronger dedication to promoting women's representation and leadership within the force.

There is a great deal of excitement surrounding the all-female marching group, as it's anticipated to be the focal point of this year's Republic Day parade. The directive from last year by the Ministry of Defence encouraging women to participate in contingents, bands and tableaux aligns with Delhi Police's forward-thinking approach.

The Delhi Police's marching contingent has taken part in every Republic Day parade since India attained republic status in 1950. Their remarkable performance has earned them accolades, with the latest recognition coming in 2021 and a total of fifteen times being adjudged best. The motto they follow is "Shanti, Seva aur Nyaya" (Peace, Service and Justice), reflecting their dedication to serving the nation while upholding these principles.
