NEW DELHI: In the Ferozepur cantonment on Sunday night, an Indian Army lieutenant colonel shot and killed his wife before shooting himself.

According to the police, at 9.15 p.m. on Sunday at their home in the Ferozepur cantonment, the 44-year-old army officer shot his 42-year-old wife in the head.

He afterward walked to the quarter guard of the unit, where he worshiped at a temple and shot himself in the head as well, according to police sources.

Army officers went to his house to tell his wife about the action he had taken, but when they called, no one picked up. When they arrived, they discovered that she was dead.

The officer admitted in a suicide note that he had shot his wife because of a marital argument, according to an army release. The pair was receiving counseling, according to the army public relations officer.

The officer was from Himachal Pradesh, but his wife was from nearby Uttarakhand's Dehradun.

The bodies were brought to the public hospital in Ferozepur for the post-mortem. On their trip to Ferozepur, the officer, and his wife's relatives.

According to government statistics, the self-employed had the highest rate of suicide deaths (20,231), and the farming industry had the lowest rate (10,881 occurrences). According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data published by the Union Home Ministry, independent contractors were followed by salaried workers and the unemployed.

India's suicide rate rose by 6.2 percent in 2021. The suicide rate is the number of suicides per 100,000 people. It is commonly regarded as a common yardstick for comparison.

In 2021, there were 12 suicides nationwide. Sikkim (39.2), Puducherry (31.8), Telangana (26.9), Kerala (39.7), and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (39.7) recorded the highest rates of suicide (26.9).

According to NCRB data, of all the states, Maharashtra had the most suicides, followed by Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh.
