Meerut: A baby girl was found stuffed inside three gunny bags on the side of a road in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, 85 km away from Delhi.

The newborn was found by local people when they heard her wails and found her wrapped in layers of sacks.

A gut-wrenching video shows how passersby removed the sacks one by one to find the crying infant. Police were informed about the event, who rushed the baby to the hospital.

Manisha Agarwal, the doctor in charge at the District Women's hospital said that the baby was in a bad shape when they brought her in. "Her placenta was attached to her body and there was a rotting smell," said Dr Agarwal.

She was sent to the newborn care unit and is in a much better condition now.

As the baby was thrown out in the open, managing her temperature was critical. Receiving mother's milk within an hour after delivery is important which must have not been provided to her as well. Dr Agarwal further said that all these factors could prove to be harmful to her health but the team is trying their level best to treat her.

The baby was found in a locality called Shatabdi Nagar.

Dr Akhilesh Narayan Singh said they received a phone call reporting about the newfound baby. A police team was sent immediately and the baby was admitted to the district women's hospital. "All SOPs are being followed," added Dr Singh.

Despite the government's countless awareness programmes to promote gender equality, female infanticide is still the murky reality of the country. Girl children are found abandoned every year and often left to die.

Last year a baby girl was found inside a large earthen pot buried three feet under a cremation ground in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.
