GUWAHATI: On Saturday 20 November, Delhi Police arrested two persons named Nawal and Nagendra Bhatti for allegedly raping a 20-year old girl in Delhi.

On 13 November, the police official at the Pandav Nagar Police Station, Delhi received a phone call from Mayur Vihar Phase-1 about the gang rape.

On reaching, the spot of Mayur Vihar Phase-1, police found two girls, one the rape victim and another girl who was a minor. The girls informed the police about the incident that one of them was gang-raped by the two persons and assaulted the minor.

Delhi Commission of Women's Crisis Intervention Centre's Counsellor recorded the statement of the Delhi rape victim and counselled the two victims.

Both the female victims were then sent for medical examination as part of the investigation. A case has been registered against the accused under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 506 which is punishment for criminal intimidation and section 306 for Rape charges and section 34 (Acts done by more than one person in furtherance of common intention).

A thorough investigation on the case has been initiated by the Delhi Police as numerous team was deployed and a huge search operation was held to catch the rape accused.

The two accused persons were later identified as Nawal who lives in Acharya Niketan Patparganj, Delhi and another Nagendra Bhatti living in Pandav Nagar, Delhi. The two were detained by the Delhi police from the area of Yamuna Khadar.

The two admitted to having committed such the crime of gang rape during their interrogation with police officials but the investigation is still going on.

Crime against girls in Delhi has been increasing in comparison to the data of the previous year. According to the data released a month ago by the National Crime Records Bureau, Delhi recorded the highest number of crimes against women among all the metropolitan cities of India. As per the data by the Delhi Police, 1,725 women have been allegedly raped till 31 October of this year.
