Kolkata: Former Union Minister and Member of Parliament elected from West Bengal's Asansol, Babul Supriyo, has officially joined the Trinamool Congress today after leaving the saffron party and declaring that he would quit politics.

On July 31, Supriyo had declared that he would quit politics and also give up his seat as Asansol's sitting MP after he was removed as a Union Minister of BJP-ruled central government.

However, he stated that he would continue to work constitutionally as the MP even after quitting in the first week of August.

While addressing the press, Supriyo said, "I meant it from my heart when I said I will leave politics. However, I felt there was a huge opportunity that was entrusted upon me. All my friends said my decision to leave politics was wrong and emotional."

He added, "I am very proud that I am changing my decision. I am coming back for a great opportunity to serve Bengal. I am very excited. I will meet didi on Monday. I am overwhelmed by the warm welcome."

The news of Babul Supriyo joining the Trinamool Congress was shared by the party on their official Twitter handle. The tweet read, "Today, in the presence of National General Secretary @abhishekaitc and RS MP @derekobrienmp, former Union Minister and sitting MP @SuPriyoBabul joined the Trinamool family. We take this opportunity to extend a very warm welcome to him!"
