AASU and NESO delegates from Assam prevented from meeting injured protesters in Tripura

Guwahati: A team of delegates of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) including the student body chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya and North East Students’ Organization had left for Tripura on Thursday in order to take stock of the health of the protesters of the Citizenship Bill who had to meet injuries in police firing during the protest. But, the latest update on the trip of the delegates is that the members of the students’ body are being kept suspended from meeting the student protesters in on reaching the land of Tripura.

Notably, the tribal youths in Tripura were demonstrating protest against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in 2016 Madhabbari and adjacent areas on January 8. The Tripura Police in order to stop the protesters had open fire on them which resulted in the students meeting injuries. As per reports, there are 15 such students who sustained the injuries and seven others are in a critical state.

The student body leaders led by Bhattacharya, though reached Tripura to take account of the situation and meet the local people, but could not proceed further as they were stopped by the police in Khumulwng of Agartala.

The student body, during their protest, clashed with the police at Khumulwng and faced lathi charge and blank fire to disperse the protesters. Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to chase away the protesters.

Moreover, Section 144 of the CrPC has also been imposed in the state’s Madhabbari and adjacent areas for an indefinite period.
