Agnes Kharshiing Case: Six people have been apprehended so far

Shillong: One month has passed since brutal attack of Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Kharshiing, the arrested number of the accused stands at six. The other accused are at large and and neither the lookout notice has been issued nor their bank accounts frozen. The suspect includes the President of the Nationalist People’s Party (NPP) East Jaintia Hills District Nibhamon Chullet. Where the rest of the accused gone have is a big question raised by the family members and well wishers of Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma.

Jayney Sangma , a prominent activist of Garo Hills categorically told a group of newsmen that they are unhappy with the progress of the investigation carried out by the Police. “How can the alleged people involved in the attack evade police arrest for one month”, she quipped, adding, “arrest of only six people makes us very apprehensive”.

On a similar tone, a close family member of Agnes Kharshiing told The Sentinel that the investigation and action taken by the Police department has been lackadaisical. “ If they have the names of the absconding suspects, issue a look out notice and freeze their bank account should be a step forward”, state a close relative of Kharshiing adding that the the family members are not satisfied with the slow stride of the police.

A senior police official of East Jaintia Hills District said that the investigating team are tracking to know about the whereabouts of the suspects who were involved in the attack, even as he mentioned that the names have already been furnished in the Meghalya High Court. The Police offcial said that the suspects also hails from the other districts and the district police are in constant with their counterparts in order to nab the culprit.

While anxiety mounts within the victim family on the time frame that these perpetrators number 30-40 will be arrested, the clamor for a CBI inquiry has been mounting. Jaynie sangma said that the investigation team is taking more of its time to bring the rest of the perpetrators into justice.
