Agriculture Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh apprised on problems faced by farmers, Shillong

SHILLONG: The Hills Farmers Union (HFU) central body on Thursday apprised the Agriculture Minister of Meghalaya Banteidor Lyngdoh on the problems faced by the farmers especially concerning the drop in prices of tomato in the market. In this, connection the Union had also submitted a memorandum to the Minister pointing out the various problems and grievances encountered by the farmers.

Speaking to reporters, Allfondbirth Kharsyntiew general secretary HFU said, "We have had complaints from farmers especially from Smith area on the price of tomato's in the market at Iewduh."

He informed that during an inspection at the common market at Iewduh it was found that the prices of tomatos have dropped at a rate of Rs. 5-10 per kg and good quality tomato are selling at a price of Rs. 12.

"This has greatly affected the livelihood of the farmers and because the prices of tomatoes have dropped many of the farmers have outstanding loans to be paid to the banks," he said. When asked, he informed that the Minister has assured them that the problems encountered by the farmers will be examined and the government will try to remove their problems.

The Union in the memorandum had also apprised the Minister on the need for border hats and cold storage.
