Assam Rains: 76 Villages washed away, 25,000 affected As Arunachal Pradesh opens the Ranganadi dam

Seventy-six villages in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have been entirely submerged in water after incessant rains led to the opening of the Ranganadi Dam. After this incident lives of thousands of people have been affected.

Owing to the overflow of water on Thursday the NEEPCO authorities were bound to open the three gates of the Ranganadi dam at Yajuli in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The water released from the dam has washed away 76 villages in Lakhimpur district. This calamity directly impacted nearly 25, 000 people and harmed 3,560 hectares of standing crop.

The release of dam water in March last year triggered havoc in 220 villages in Lakhimpur and breached embankments at Amtola.

The Lakhimpur district administration on Thursday alerted the local people and warned them to remain cautious but not to get panicked over the release of excess water from Ranganadi dam.

In Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, over one lakh people were affected by the heavy rains and flash floods. Total six districts of Assam, ferry services have been stopped because of the rising river waters.

In Arunachal Pradesh’s capital Itanagar, interminable rain since Thursday has triggered heavy flash floods contributing to a child’s death and three people missing. Three more people have died in the state because of rampant landslides and floods.

Early on Friday, a landslide blocked roads in the Papum Pare district in Arunachal Pradesh. Many places at the Yupia-Potin Trans-Arunachal Highway have been blocked because of rapid landslides.
