At Least 13 Killed and Several Wounded in Vietnam Landslides

Guwahati: Heavy landslides triggered by incessant rain in the resort city of Nha Trang, Vietnam have led to an utter destruction in the city. The sad part is that at least 13 people are killed in the landslides caused by a tropical storm with four others missing in south-central Vietnam. The severe landslides have collapsed houses and have also buried the victims right away.

Rescue operations have commenced by the Vietnam Disaster Management Authority in an attempt to recover the victims and rescue the injured for an immediate treatment. An official of the disaster management authority has also informed that some 600 soldiers are mobilized in search of the dead and injured victims so that could be rescued before being too late. People living mostly in the high-risk areas are evacuated by the soldiers.

The Disaster official further states that the storm weakened to a tropical depression at sea off the south-central coastal province of Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan on Sunday night. As Vietnam is a place quite prone to floods and storms, hundreds of people are killed due to natural disasters each year and this certainly is a burning issue for the country. In this landslide as well, the national weather forecaster had warned of heavy rains and threatens of flash floods in Hoa Binh, Son La, Lai Chau and Lang Son provinces.

Another incident of such natural hazards taking the country under its grip happened in this year itself when Vietnam faced a similar tropical storm Son Tinh in northern coastal areas. As stated by the General Statistics Office, the long coastline makes Vietnam prone to destructive storms and flooding. Last year marks a huge disaster in the history of the nation with 389 falling prey to natural disasters such as floods and landslides.
