Staff Correspondent

Shillong, July 25: Three officials of the Atomic Mineral Division (AMD) were injured and two of the vehicles that they were travelling were damaged in an attack by unknown miscreants near Wahkaji, South West Khasi Hills district on Wednesday.

Wahkaji is around 140 kms from here and is en route to the proposed Uranium mining site. Confirming the incident, the Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills, Isawanda Laloo said, “One Bolero was gutted and another jeep was damaged and three people were injured in the attack by miscreants.” The injured have been rushed to Mawkyrwat Community Helath Centre (CHC).

She further informed that the Superentendent of Police (SP) and magistrates have already rushed to the area of occurrence. The area is considered vulnerable in view of the consistent and hard pressed opposition by pressure groups against the AMD as well as the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) to carry on with the preliminary works to extract uranium from the area. The AMD officials are understood to have been en route to the Uranium deposit belt before they were literally ambushed, informed another source.
