GUWAHATI: The AJYCP (Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad) has said that the BJP-led government has betrayed the indigenous people of Assam on the issue of foreigners.

Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement at Silchar on Friday that ‘the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 would get its passage in Parliament’, AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai told The Sentinel: “In the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha poll Narendra Modi said that all Bangladeshis would have to pack up from Assam in the event of the BJP coming to power.

However, after becoming the Prime Minister now he is unrolling the red carpet in Assam for Bangladeshis. This has proved it beyond doubt that the BJP government has no concern for the indigenous people of Assam. It has betrayed Assam. At a time when there have been agitations in the State against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 the JPC has finalized its report. And now the Prime Minister is saying that the Citizenship Bill will get its passage in Parliament. Instead of solving the problems of Assam, the BJP government is creating newer problems for the State.”

Changmai, however, said: “We’re not going to sit idle at the government’s decision. We’re ready to take to the streets against the BJP. We appeal to all people of the State to stand against the BJP in the coming Lok Sabha election.”
