Bollywood Actress Urmila Matondkar Joins Congress Today

Guwahati: Noted Film Actress Urmila Matondkar today joined Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha polls after a meeting with the party President Rahul Gandhi. The party made the announcement by tweeting a picture of the actress receiving a bouquet from the party President.

Matondkar is expected to be a Congress candidate from Mumbai in the upcoming general election which is scheduled to be held from the next month in seven phases. Joining the party, Matondkar said, "It was a step towards active politics given that she had been raised in a family that believed in social awareness and strong political ideals."

She further said, "I am from a family that has shaped my political views based on the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel. I am into social awareness right from my childhood."

While speaking to reporters, she said that she knows when filmstars enter politics they are expected to pull voters because of their glamour but she had requested to keep such thoughts away when it comes to her.

Meanwhile, Milind Deora in his first press conference in Delhi after being named as the Chief of the Mumbai Congress said that he has known Urmila ji for years. "She is now one of India's finest artistes but someone who is extremely opinionated on issues affecting our society and someone taking the political step for the long run to serve the nation through the Congress party," said Deora.

The Lok Sabha polls in six constituencies in Mumbai is slated on April 29 along with 17 others in the fourth phase of polling for the national election which will be held from April 11 to May 19 and the result of which will be declared on May 23.

It has further been reported that if Matondkar will be nominated for Mumbai North, she will face BJP lawmaker Gopal Shetty in the seat which is seen to be a stronghold of the ruling party.

As an actress and in her long career, Urmila Matondkar has starred opposite top actors in films like "Narasimha", "Chamatkar", "Indian", "Judaai", "Daud", "Satya", "Kaun", "Ek Hasina Thi", "Bhoot" and "Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara".
