Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB): Consultation Required, Says Conrad K Sangma

SHILLONG: National People’s Party (NPP), National president and Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma has said that the party has already made it clear to the leadership of the BJP that there should be “proper consultation and discussion” on any issues affecting the people of the northeast including the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).

Replying to a query on the challenges the NPP would face in its alliance with the BJP especially the belligerence of the latter to implement the CAB, Conrad said that the party would continue to work and fight at the same time on any issues which concerns the people of the region.

“Proper discussion and proper consultation must take place in any given situation. The interest of the people of the Northeast must be protected,” the NPP chief said.

He however said that having regional aspirations does not mean that one is going against the national interest.

“It is important that regional aspirations don’t get lost in the entire national aspect,” Conrad K Sangma added.

Meanwhile, on the need for all leaders of the Northeast to come around and fight the alleged politico-militant and politico-criminal nexus, the NPP president said, “Even before the results came out, I had the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and former Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to raise this issue. We all agreed that strict action should be taken and NIA level inquiry should be instituted to investigate on this nexus.
