Shillong, June 5: The Congress on Tuesday demanded a judicial probe into the violent incidents that hit parts of Shillong city since the night of May 31st . The Congress legislature Party (CLP) held a meeting at the residence of the Leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma and expressed concern at the spate of incidents that sparked off from an incident at Mawlonghat.

Addressing newsmen soon after the meeting, Mukul Sangma while expressing concern over the five days of violent incidents said, “We demand a judicial inquiry because the present government has messed up with sustained peace that we have managed to restore in the past eight years”.

“We (Congress government) have handled the challenges and resolved one problem after the other and this three-month old government has failed to carry on the momentum from what they have inherited from us,” stated Mukul Sangma in his attack against the Conrad K Sangma-led MDA government.

Taking further jibes at the Government, the Congress leader also questioned on who is taking the call to reign in the volatile situation. “Whether It’s the MHA, the Chief Minister or the Home minister, we don’t know,” stated the Leader of the Opposition, even as he added that as people of the state they are in the same boat and his party will not allow the boat to sink under the present incumbent.

Asked on whether the party agrees with the vocal demand to relocate the Harijan colony as raised by a number of social organizations, Mukul Sangma said, “We wanted the judicial inquiry to be instituted and then know about the recommendations that it makes before making an outright call”. However, he said that the congress will go with the sentiments of the people.

It may be noted that a magisterial inquiry has already been instituted into the incident that nearly took a communal turn in the past five days.
