Darrang district expected to record 75% turnout

MANGALDAI: Polling in 807 polling stations for a total of 914 seats passed off peacefully by and large in Darrang on Wednesday.

Even after the stipulated time of closing, a large numbers of voters are stated to be in queue in a number of polling stations which reflects the good participation of people. However, the election department is yet to finalize the figure of the poll percentage till filling of this report. According to Election Officer of Darrang, Kartik Kalita, the final reports of polling from the polling officials concerned could not be received as polling was going till evening but he was confident about the figure of the average poll percentage crossing 75 per cent mark in the district.

Meanwhile, talking to The Sentinel, Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Barman said that baring minor incidents of some delay in starting of polling in two polling stations under Dalgaon Revenue Circle due to some rift between two sections over the poll venue, the polling in the district was completed successfully. Meanwhile, in a sad incident, a polling official and PWD staff, Ratul Saikia (53) who has staying in theresidence of a colleague at Upohupara, Mangaldai since Tuesday night, died before joining his poll duty scheduled to start from 3 pm on Wednesday. The deceased was a permanent resident of Kahilipara in Guwahati. In another incident, one Purna Deka (55), while standing in queue in a polling station in Saikiapara village near Mangaldai, reportedly suffered a severe heart attack and died.
