Demand For Implementation of NRC, Inner Line Permit Mounts

A REPORTER

SHILLONG: The Central Executive Committee of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has urged the State government to implement NRC and ILP in the State of Meghalaya. “Similar to the State of Assam, Meghalaya have also been soft targets to illegal immigrants for the past three decades. Therefore, the demands made by various pressure groups for implementation of NRC to keep check of illegal immigrants needs to be given due consideration under the presence circumstances,” KHNAM president Pyndapborthiaw Saibon said.

He said that it is encouraging to see that the Government is open and ready to discuss the matter and with the consultation and discussion amongst various sections. “We are affirmative that Government will be able to implement the NRC in the State of Meghalaya,” he said.

Saibon pointed out that the declaration of NRC in Assam has expanded the possibility of entry of those illegal immigrants whose names have not been included in the NRC, into the State of Meghalaya. Therefore, on a parallel line with NRC we also request that implementation of ILP in the State Meghalaya be taken into consideration.

He said that there is a need to ensure additional forces and additional check gates at all entry and exit points. There is a need for the Government to issue a direction to the contractors (Private and Public) to refrain from hiring labourers from outside the state without proper verifications.
