Demand for withdrawal of case against intellectuals in Sivasagar district

GAURISAGAR: Sangrami Yuva Chatra Parishad, Amguri and Samaguri committees in Sivasagar district, on Saturday evening staged a protest at Samaguri on the outskirts of Amguri by performing the symbolic funeral of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for registering a case of sedition against well-known scholar Dr Hiren Gohain, Manjit Mahanta and Akhil Gogoi.

The activists took out a torch rally throughout the historic Dhudar Ali carrying the symbolic body of Sarbananda Sonowal and shouted various slogans. Later, they performed the funeral of Sonowal at Samaguri Chariali. In the protest, activists of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti, Tai Ahom Yuva Chatra Parishad and Mahila Samiti took part. The protesters demanded withdrawal of the cases filed against Dr Hiren Gohain, Manjit Mahanta and Akhil Gogoi and scrapping the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The programme was presided over by Pallav Jyoti Gogoi, secretary of Sangrami Yuva Chatra Parishad, Sivasagar district committee, and Ritumoni Hazarika, president of Chatra Mukti Sangram Samiti, Sivasagar.
