Latasil police files secession case against Dr Hiren Gohain in Guwahati

Guwahati: A suo-moto case of Secession has been filed against Dr. Hiren Gohain by the Latasil Police station. As stated by police, the recent uttering and public meetings held by Dr. Hiren Gohain against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 has been termed as supporting independence from India.

It is reported that, while staging protesting against the CAB at Guwahati, the intellectual stated that if the voices of the people of Assam are not paid heed by the Government of India and Government of Assam, then the people of Assam will look for ‘Independenece”.

It is this statement of seeking independence from India has been treated as a statement of secession. However, this statement created quite a buzz in the social media with people speaking for and against the intellectual for his statement.

On the other hand, the very news of Latasil police filing FIR against the intellectual has enraged the people of the state hailing from all walks of life. The intelligentsia of Assam along with the student bodies and organizations and the common masses have stood with Dr. Gohain challenging the move of the Latasil police and have condemned the police for secession allegations on the intellectual. They also said that the reason behind uttering the particular statement was more of seeking attention from the Centre and not propagating secession.

Mr. Haidar Hussain stated, “This was a suicidal move by Government. We are meeting now and soon shall chalk out more protests programs against this draconian attitude of Assam Government.”

The suo moto case vide no registered was 15/2019 under section 120(B)/121/124 of the Indian Penal Code.
