Erosion by the Charikoriya poses threat to embankment at Harhi

A CORRESPONDENT

LAKHIMPUR: Due to incessant downpour for over a week and alleged dereliction of the Water Resources Department towards shouldering its responsibilities on time, the present wave of flood caused by various rivers has put the people of Dhakuakhana subdivision in a miserable condition. Simultaneously, massive river erosion has also posed as an alarming threat to them in various parts of the subdivision.

Of late, continuous erosion caused by the Charikoriya River has eroded half of its embankment away at Gorkhali village under Harhi Gaon Panchayat of the subdivision. This embankment is the security to the people of Dhakuakhana subdivision along with a larger part of Pachim Machkhowa under Dhemaji district. Under such circumstances, the people living in those areas have to spend their days in the fear of the embankment being breached by the overflowning water of the river at any time. The place, where erosion has been going on, falls under the jurisdiction of the Dhemaji Legislative Assembly Constituency (LAC) and Lakhimpur House of the People’s Constituency (HPC). It is alleged that Dhemaji LAC MLA Dr. Ranoj Kumar Pegu, Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah and the department concerned have initiated no permanent measures to check the erosion though it has been going on for a long period.

Local people took up steps to prevent the alarming erosion on Monday by installing bamboo spars in the main affected spots. They bore all the expenditure. Samujjal Chetia, the husband of Harhi Zila Parishad member Titumoni Chetia, has extended his helping hand in this regard.
