SHILLONG, July 26: The secretary of Nonghali village who is also a local farmer in the area under Mawryngkneng, Korbarhun Mawsong has highlighted the plight of tomato farmers as the market price for the produce has drastically dropped in the last few weeks.

“We are facing plenty of hardship because the price of tomato in the local market has dropped compared with the recent past,” Mawsong told The Sentinel.

He informed that at present the farmers are not gaining any profit from the produce as most of the produce had to be thrown out because it’s all rotten. Mawsong said previously the selling price of tomato in the market was Rs30 to 40 but now the price has dropped to Rs5 to 10 per Kg. He also urged the state government to take up the matter seriously and address the grievances encountered by the farmers.
