Former Defence Minister George Fernandes Passes Away

Guwahati: George Fernandes, former Defence Minister in the Vajpayee government breathed his last on Tuesday in New Delhi. The former minister, at the time of his death, was 88-years-old. Fernandes, during the last days of his life, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

The funeral ceremony of the former minister will be conducted on the arrival of his son Sean Fernandes who stays in the United States. The family has decided to complete the funeral in New Delhi.

Fernandes, born on June 3, 1930, has a glorious political past and have served the Indian government in various roles. He was a former Indian trade unionist, politician, journalist, agriculturist, and member of Rajya Sabha from Bihar.

A veteran and key member of the Janata Dal, Fernandes had founded the Samata Party. The last time he was seen in the parliament was as a Rajya Sabha MP and remained in service between August 2009 and July 2010.
