SHILLONG: A free-health camp was held for the villagers of Kongthong village in East Khasi Hills district.

Kongthong village is famous since people here do not use names to communicate with each other. Instead each person has a tune assigned to him or her by which they are identified. The free health camp was organized by Go Northeast.

According to the organization, coming to know the people and interacting with the committee chairman Rothel Khongsit and others they learnt the hard pursuit of the people for basic amenities of health care, education and infrastructure. “The nearest public health centre is in Khrang which is 20 minutes away and that to deprived of any doctor for most parts of the week,” Go Northeast co-founder Reeturaj Yogi said.

Yogi informed that the roads were just built in 2013 and it is yet to become properly motorable and the education scene is also such that children can only study till Class 8. “This is sad in today’s day and world,” he added.

Go Northeast arranged a five doctor team led by Dr. Nitu Deka from Assam and successfully conducted the camp at Kongthong. The major issues were skin infection, stomach disorder, hygiene and food. Go Northeast will be conducting camps in future too and promote the tourism side also to bring this gem of a place to the forefront.
