SHILLONG, July 15: Soon after the Ranikor administrative unit in South West Khasi Hills District was upgraded to a civil sub-division, the state government is examining the possibility of upgrading the other administrative units and C& RD Block to civil sub-divisions.

“Before the government takes a decision on the demands made by various MLAs to upgrade administrative units to civil sub-divisions in different districts in the state, the government will first have to examine the feasibility to upgrade from all angles,” Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya Prestone Tynsong said.

It may be reminded that after the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government had assured the up-gradation of the Ranikor Administrative Unit to a civil sub division there were many local NGOs and MLAs who had approach the government for the same.

Some of these areas which had requested for upgradation to a civil sub division includes Mawlai, Mawsynram, Umsning just to name a few.

When asked, if the demand for the civil sub division by other MLAs was only because the government had upgraded the Ranikor Administrative Unit to a Civil Sub- Division, Tynsong said, the government welcomes any demand for civil sub division which comes any part of the state, however the government cannot make any decision in haste as it will have to examine the demand first before making a decision.

However the Deputy Chief Minister has also indicated that there are a few Administrative Unit and C& RD Block which needs to be upgraded to a civil sub division for the sole purpose of providing better service to the public.

“But the government will also have to look at the expenditure and funds available because this is a crucial aspect in upgrading any C&RD Block or Administrative Unit,” he said.
