Karunanidhi Funeral: Two die in stampede at Kalaignar's last rites ceremony

Guwahati: A man and a woman have died and more than 47 persons have been injured in the funeral procession of DMK patriarch Muthuvel Karunanidhi.

The streets of Chennai remained flooded with Kalaignar's mourning supporters who were accompanying their "leader of the masses" to Anna Memorial in Marina Baech where he would be put to eternal rest. The stampede reportedly happened due to a sudden rush of mourning supporters which caused an imbalance and many of them fell down.

“A man and a woman were brought dead to the hospital,” A. Elango, an official of the Rajiv Gandhi general hospital, told Reuters, adding that 47 people had been admitted for minor injuries.

Karunanidhi, a towering personality in Indian politics had served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu 5 times and is best known for the industrial development of Tamil Nadu by roping in foreign investments.

On July 28, Karunanidhi was admitted to Kauvery Hospital in Chennai after a dip in his blood pressure. He breathed his last on August 7 at 6.10 PM.
