SHILLONG, July 12: In an interesting twist in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), the Chairman of the district Council LG Nongseij resigned this morning from his position which has left the election of the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the KHADC scheduled for today in a limbo.

Nongseij had submitted his resignation letter as chairman to the secretary of the district council as there was no deputy chairman in KHADC.

It may be reminded that earlier the Governor of Meghalaya has scheduled the election of the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the KHADC following the resignation of PN Syiem on Monday morning before facing the trial of strength in the House session.

Speaking to reporters in wake of the resignation of the chairman, NPP MDC from Nongkrem, HS Shylla informed that since the chairman has resigned the election for a new CEM will now be held tomorrow (Friday) at 11 am.

He also questioned the timing and motive of LG Nongseij chairman of the district council who is also a member of Peoples Democratic Front (PDF) for his decision to resign.

Shylla also informed that the government will nominate a pro tem chairman and caretaker in the district council from the existing MDCs in KHADC.

However, the names of the MDCs were not revealed by Shylla as he said that the government is finalizing the nomination.

“The resignation of Nongseij has proved that this is an intentional move by the PDF,” he said adding that the PDF under the leadership of then CEM PN Syiem till date has not appointed a deputy chairman in KHADC because they had anticipated this situation may arise.

He also informed that the strength of the Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA), a new alliance in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has increased from 17 members to 18.
