KHADC Says No To Traditional Heads Charging High Rates

SHILLONG: After a number of complaints have been received the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in an Executive Committee meeting held last month has decided to issue a notification that any traditional head charging exorbitant rates to execute sale deeds of land appropriate action will be taken against such persons. Speaking to reporters, on Thursday Latiplang Kharkongor EM in-charge Land, Mines and Minerals informed that the council had learned that villages authorities, Syiem Raid and other persons acting on their behalf within the Khasi Hill Autonomous District are charging an exorbitant rate to execute sale deeds of lands which are in the range of 10% of the sale value of the land. “This is illegal and such act should be immediately reported to the Executive Committee, of KHADC for appropriate action against such persons,” he said. When asked, Kharkongor informed that most of the complaints are coming in from Ri-Bhoi district. “This will greatly affect those people who have taken out a loan to purchase land and this must be rectified,” he said.
