SHILLONG, July 30: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council has decided to visit Mawthabah on August 2, next month to see the nature of activities in Mawthabah-Wahkaji area days after two AMD officials were assaulted and property damaged in the area.

KHADC CEM HS Shylla on Monday termed the activities of the Atomic Mineral Division (AMD) as illegal.

As per the Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo, she had spoken to the regional director of AMD Shillong to inquire the activities in the area and the regional director had stated that survey of minerals was taking place at Wahkaji-Mawthabah and permission has been taken from the land-owners. However, no mining has taken place.

Shylla stated that the KHADC had also written to DoNER Minister, Jitendra Singh to stop any activity in the area pertaining to uranium mining and it was assured that no mining activity will take place in the area. “Then why are they continuing with the activity?” Shylla asked while adding that even the previous Mukul Sangma led State Government had asked UCIL not to carry out any activity in the area. He also alleged that the AMD is bypassing the State Government, KHADC Government by carrying out such activities in the area.
