SHILLONG, June 22: Two days after the women folks residing at Them Iew Mawlong staged a protest against the High Level Committee (HLC) and land survey conducted by the government, Khasi Student Union (KSU) president central body Lambokstarwell Marngar said that the protest implies that maybe these people does not want normalcy to return to the capital city.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Marngar said, “This protest by these people shows that maybe they don’t want normalcy to return because their protest will only anger the local people of the state.”

He said that the residents of Sweeper Line cannot claim that the land belongs to them as per the agreement signed with the government in 1954. When asked, he said “The protest of these people residing at Them Iew Mawlong against the High Level Committee clearly indicates that they have no respect towards the state government.”

He said that some of the residents of Sweeper Line are government employees and hence they should listen to what the government has planned concerning this issue.

“If they don’t listen to the government, it only shows that they consider themselves above the government. However, the state government should complete its duty concerning this issue,” he said.

He said that the Union is not talking about those people residing at Sweeper Line illegally as they have already violated the law and the government can even penalize them as per the various sections of the law.
