A REPORTER

SHILLONG: PWD Sub-Divisional Officer-turned politician Lakhon Biam, who had recently won the MDC election from Nangbah constituency, has been elected as the new Chairman of Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).

In 2017 Biam resigned from his position as SDO from the PWD and contested the Assembly elections as a BJP candidate from Raliang constituency against Comingone Ymbon. However, he was unable to achieve victory then.

After the loss, later Biam resigned from the BJP and joined the United Democratic Party (UDP) and contested the Council polls from Nangbah and defeated the then sitting MDC of NPP Shemhok Garod by more than 1,000 votes.

The election for the post of JHADC Chairman was held on Saturday and was overseen by the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills District Garod LSN Dykes. The DC informed the House that he had received two nomination papers in support of the candidature of Lakhon Biam for the post of chairman and later announced the name of Biam as the new chairman of JHADC.

After Biam officially takes up his seat in the House as the new Chairman, other members of the Council including Nartiang Umladang constituency MDC Thombor Shiwat, Tuber constituency MDC Lasky Rymbai, Saipung constituency MDC AH Darnei and others will be sworn in.
