Landslide Havoc In Guwahati City, One Killed At Kotabari

GUWAHATI: Landslide took the life of a man at Kotabari under Gorchuk Police Station here on Wednesday.

All landslide-prone areas have been identified in Kamrup(M) district. Notices have also been issued to the residents in landslide-prone areas, besides carrying out awareness campaigns. However, all such measures have failed to make a number of people move to safer areas. They opt to stay put there. Such a daredevil attitude often takes lives in Guwahati.

The landslide occurred around 8 am on Wednesday when it was raining. When a large mass of red soil and big stones was slipping down from the upper reaches of the Kotabari hill towards the house of Narayan Saha (56), other members of the family could come out instantly. However, Narayan Saha was trapped under the molten mass. The house was located on the hillside. Narayan was rescued from there and admitted to a private hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Narayan Saha left behind his nine-year-old son, besides his wife.

Another incident of a landslide at Matia under Azara Police Station on Wednesday left a person injured, besides damaging two houses. At Amiya Nagar in the Chandmari area, the guard wall of a road eroded, leading the slip of land of the road as well.

Meanwhile, the Kamrup (M) District Magistrate issued a prohibitory order on Wednesday banning all excavation and blasting in the district till further notice. The district magistrate also made it clear that if permissions for excavation/blasting were given for central or state projects as well as individuals that would also remain banned now.
