Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma backs government units in the uranium mining matter

Staff Correspondent

Shillong: A day after the Khasi Students Union (KSU) raised its concern over the recovery of a uranium packet from the border town of Moreh (Manipur) with a label of the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) and Atomic Minerals Division (AMD) allegedly said to have originated from Meghalaya, State Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma outrightly ruled out that such activities were carried out by the twin Central Government agencies in the uranium sites in Meghalaya.

Making his government stand clear on the vexed uranium issue in the State, the Meghalaya Chief Minister stated on Monday, “There have been no such incidents and there is no question of this kind of things happening but yes if there are reports like that coming out we will definitely look into this matter”. Sangma further added, “We have been very firm on this issue and there is no question that the government would allow such activities.”

The Chief Minister also feigned ignorance about the reports that have appeared in the press especially when the KSU has accused the UCIL and AMD of using individuals to mine uranium ore from Mawthabah area of South West Khasi Hills district. It may be mentioned that in 2016, the Meghalaya Cabinet had decided to revoke its earlier decision that granted permission to UCIL to conduct pre-mining activities in the uranium site.
