Boundary row

Shillong: Four days after Meghalaya Congress leader Mukul Sangma accused the present Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) dispensation of being insensitive to the issues related to the interstate boundary row with Assam, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong hit back by questioning their audacity.

Tynsong was asked by newsperson on the role of the State Government soon after the New Balakhowa episode where the Secretary of Nonspung Chiefdom was arrested by Assam police deep inside the non-disputed areas of Ri- Bhoi district.

Soon after the reported incident, the district officials of both the States were in touch to ensure that normalcy is in place, informed Tynsong soon after the Cabinet meeting on Thursday. He further said that the Chief Minister of the two States will be meeting by the first or second week of June to deliberate on the contentious issues pertaining to the inter-state border dispute. The Deputy Chief Minister said, “We have just been just barely one year in power and our pursuance on this vexed issue has been hindered by the Election Commission of India model code of conduct and such an allegation is nothing short of irresponsible throne thrown by the Congress party”.

While it is apparently clear that the last week’s incident has further ignited a debate in the State where the Assam Police have been accused of encroaching deep inside the Meghalaya territory, Tynsong was apt in saying, “Those developments have been taken at the highest level. We will further peruse it after the elections”.
